Or the simple sophistication of the open-air restaurants of the tiny Italian Quarter (named Quartier Bloom after his own creation), complete with sultry tango lessons? He suggested fishing for it—and the first salmon to emerge had the ring in its mouth. The vast profits from American cotton and tobacco built the grand mansions of the Merchant City in the 18th century.
