An expert review of Uniworld's itinerary We’ve just returned from what can only be described as one of our most enchanting travel experiences to date! Uniworld’s "Splendors of Egypt and the Nile" tour is an absolute essential for any avid traveller’s wish list.  Explore Egypt Cruise Offers Our journey commenced in Cairo, where we indulged in luxury at the Four Seasons Cairo at Nile Plaza - an exquisite retreat offering stunning views of the Nile. Our pre-cruise excursions introduced us to the rich tapestry of Egypt’s history. We began with a visit to the Grand Citadel, a formidable fortress that once served as the seat of power during the Islamic period. Then we explored the breathtaking Grand Egyptian Museum, home to more than 5,000 artefacts from Tutankhamun’s tomb. Walking through this museum, which houses the treasures of the boy king who ascended to the throne at just nine years old, was nothing short of magical. Opened to the public on November 1st, we had the unique privilege of being among the first to witness the incredible display showcasing the beautiful gold mask and other artefacts unearthed by Howard Carter in 1922. The tomb's discovery was a monumental moment in Egyptology and has since captivated the imaginations of countless visitors.                                Next, we flew south to join the SS Sphinx, where the organisation was impeccable. As travel agents, we are accustomed to orchestrating our own escapes, but on this trip, being guided effortlessly through all the details was a true luxury. The SS Sphinx truly impressed us, with our accommodations in the Royal Suite feeling fit for royalty. We had the opportunity to explore other cabin types that were also delightfully decorated and extremely comfortable. Be sure to check out our video showcasing the various categories available on our channel.  Dining on board was a real experience, offering an array of dishes inspired by Egyptian flavours, whilst also providing western alternatives like steak and chicken, ensuring everyone’s tastes were satisfied. The chefs surpassed our expectations, attentively catering to guests’ dietary preferences, which epitomised the first-class service we enjoyed throughout the voyage. The crew were amicable and attentive, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.  Now let’s delve into the itinerary - which was simply outstanding! From the beautifully preserved Temple of Dendera to the illuminated Luxor Temple, exclusive only to Uniworld guests at night, every stop offered a glimpse into the ancient world. Standing in the Valley of the Kings while entering Tutankhamun's tomb was one of the trip's highlights. Here, we found ourselves within the very space where Howard Carter excavated the treasures of the young pharaoh - an incredible experience and a thrilling moment.    One of our most cherished moments was taking a hot air balloon ride over Queen Hatshepsut's temple, providing breathtaking views over the Valley of the Kings and the majestic River Nile. Floating in the sky as the sun appeared over the horizon, alongside around 50 other balloons, was a sight we will carry in our hearts forever. Another memorable highlight was afternoon tea at the iconic Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan. This historic hotel, once a favourite of Agatha Christie, served as the inspiration for her famous novel "Death on the Nile." Sitting on the terrace with breathtaking views of the Nile as the sun dipped below the horizon, we reminisced about the hotel’s storied past and the literary genius who had once walked its halls. The passing felucca boats added to the magical ambiance, creating a truly unforgettable experience.  As our journey continued along the Nile, we visited Philae Temple, marvelling at the Aswan High Dam and transiting Esna Lock, each moment etching itself into our memories.                               Our adventure culminated with a return to Cairo and another delightful stay at the Four Seasons. This time, we visited the Pyramids of Saqqara, where we entered a tomb, leading us to the final grand spectacle of the Pyramids of Giza and the impressive Sphinx. The experience of stepping into one of these colossal structures was both exhilarating and humbling, leaving us in awe of the incredible feats accomplished by ancient engineers. Imagining the blood, sweat, and tears involved in such monumental undertakings is overwhelming.  This journey has ranked among the most remarkable experiences we've ever had. Uniworld excelled with outstanding service, superb organisation, a luxurious ship, and, perhaps most importantly, our knowledgeable Egyptologist, Mohamed, who was pivotal in enriching our experience with his insights.  Moreover, we made wonderful friendships with our fellow guests on board, sharing a camaraderie that made the cruise even more special. Assigned to bus number two, we found ourselves among equally enthusiastic travellers, all appreciating the incredible adventure together. We are pleased to now call these fellow adventurers friends for life.                             We want to reassure anyone considering this trip that we felt completely safe and secure throughout the entire journey. Hygiene was paramount, with hotels and the ship utilising mineral water for washing and ice production. Steph's expedition cruise with Seabourn I recently had the chance to experience one of our expedition cruises first-hand aboard Seabourn Venture in a Veranda Suite around the Shetlands and Orkneys. One of the main things that drew me to an expedition cruise was the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors in harder to reach places and see incredible wildlife in their natural habitats and this certainly didn't disappoint. I started my journey in Lerwick in Shetland, where I enjoyed a coastal walk and an excursion to Jarlshof, an extraordinary archaeological site in Sumburgh. This prehistoric and Norse settlement offered a fascinating glimpse into thousands of years of human history, with remnants of Bronze Age, Iron Age, Viking, and medieval buildings all in one location. The guide brought the site to life with stories and historical context, making it a truly enriching experience. Our next port of call was Fair Isle, and it quickly became one of the highlights of the trip, marked by my first experience disembarking via zodiac. We began with a scenic hike up to a lighthouse, taking in sweeping views of the rugged coastline while accompanied by the calls of noisy oystercatchers. From there, we made our way to a spot known for puffin sightings and were lucky enough to observe these charming birds up close as they landed, interacted with one another, and caught fish. Before returning to the ship, I took a peaceful walk along a small beach with crystal-clear waters. On our zodiac ride back, we made a brief detour through a sea cave, where we were delighted to spot a playful seal swimming nearby - an unforgettable end to an incredible visit. Explore Expedition Voyages While in port at Kirkwall, I had the chance to explore some of Orkney’s most fascinating cultural and historical landmarks. We began with a visit to St Magnus Cathedral, a striking example of Romanesque architecture. Following that, we took a shore excursion to the Ring of Brodgar, part of Orkney’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. This Neolithic stone circle is set in a dramatic landscape of lochs and rolling hills and our guide painted a vivid picture of the ancient rituals that may have taken place there. We concluded the tour in the charming fishing village of Stromness, where we enjoyed the highly recommended local ice cream. At Copinsay Island, we embarked on a zodiac cruise that offered an incredible opportunity to observe the island's rich birdlife and thriving grey seal population up close. The cliffs and shoreline were alive with seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes, shags, and fulmars, while the seals basked on the rocks or bobbed curiously in the water nearby. As if that wasn’t memorable enough, I also had the chance to take part in a submersible dive—an unforgettable experience that took us 30 meters beneath the surface. From the comfort of the sub, we watched jellyfish drift silently by, surrounded by the peaceful, otherworldly atmosphere of the deep. This was a bucket-list moment and a true highlight of the expedition cruise. On board Seabourn Venture   I would highly recommend Seabourn Venture to anyone looking to embark on an expedition cruise. Lions, tigers and bears: Meet India’s charismatic wildlife From the deep forests of Chhattisgarh to the salt plains of Gujarat, India is an ever-changing landscape. Its wildlife is equally as varied: here is a selection of India’s most remarkable residents and where best to see them. Sloth bear Found across multiple regions, the sloth bear is the most common bear found in India and the state animal of Bihar. With a short-haired muzzle and long curved claws, the sloth bear is equipped with the perfect tools to excavate termites and ants. The bear’s shaggy black coat makes it distinctive from other bear species, and it is easily spotted scaling trees and knocking down honeycombs to enjoy on the ground as a sweet treat. Best place for sightings: Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh. Bengal tiger The Bengal tiger is as majestic as it is magnificent, a righteous emblem of India. Spotted across central-eastern India, this subspecies is the largest of the tiger family. Habitats include grasslands, rainforests, deciduous forests and mangroves, all of which offer shelter whilst hunting or resting. A particular hot-spot is Madhya Pradesh – sprinkled with temples and palaces, this sacred region has a subtropical climate well-suited for these felines. Best place for sightings: Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh. Asiatic lion An incredibly rare and breath-taking sight when visiting India, the Asiatic lion is a little different from its African cousin. Distinguishing features include a short, dark mane with prominent ears, as well as a longitudinal fold of skin of skin running along its stomach. These lions can only be found in and around the Gir Forest of Gurjarat, at the most western tip of India. Here, the lions roam freely across 20,000 sq. km of thick, undisturbed forests and savanna plains. Best place for sightings: Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat. Lion-tailed macaque This striking monkey is the smallest of the macaque species and can be found roaming the Western Ghats mountains of southwest India. With a grand mane of hair around its face and tail like a lion, the monkey inhabits evergreen forests and can be found perched high in the forest canopy. The macaque is an Old World monkey and one to see on your journey through India. Best place for sightings: Silent Valley National Park, Kerala. Indian elephant As one of the planet’s largest mammals, the Indian elephant is a powerful animal in both strength and presence. Inhabiting grasslands and evergreen forests, these animals have smaller, rounder ears than African elephants and are typically brown to dark grey. An iconic creature, and often religiously celebrated across India, the species is protected and can be seen on safari in numerous national parks and sanctuaries. Best place for sightings: Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand. Snow leopard With its nimble build and thick fur, the snow leopard is perfectly suited to India’s Himalayan mountains, boasting some of the highest peaks in the world. The high altitude and rocky terrain requires breath-taking agility, which this big cat boasts in droves. They are extremely rare, and you will be lucky to spot one prowling through the Himalayan valleys. Best place for sightings: Hemis National Park, Ladakh. Common kingfisher Along the Western Ghats of southern India and up to the central lakes, kingfishers can be seen flitting from branch to branch in search for food. The blue plumage and ultramarine feathers of the common kingfisher in particular stand out among the deep greens and murky browns of the subtropical wetlands it inhabits. India plays host to around 12 species of kingfisher, each as bright and colourful as the next. Best place for sightings: Thol Bird Sanctuary, Gujarat. Rather than the yellow brick road, follow India’s Golden Triangle and beyond to see the spectacular wildlife of this south Asian subcontinent. Shirley's experience on board Azamara Quest   I've recently returned from an incredible trip aboard Azamara Cruises' stunning ship, Azamara Quest, and wanted to give you an insight into what she has to offer, as well as share some of my highlights from my Mediterranean sailing. I hadn't sailed with Azamara prior to this trip and it's safe to say this sailing exceeded every expectation I had! On Board Azamara Quest   Stepping aboard Azamara Quest, my colleague Elizabeth and I were met by warm, welcoming staff and clean, tasteful décor adorned with plenty of artwork and sculptures. We stayed in an Ocean View Stateroom, which was very well laid out with plenty of wardrobe space, a fabulous vanity area and a mini fridge. Outside of our stateroom, the onboard ambience was very relaxed and friendly. There were always plenty of sun loungers available around the pool and multiple areas to unwind with a cocktail or a coffee. There is a fantastic variety of dining venues to suit the different times of day. On arrival, we enjoyed a lighter lunch with panoramic views of Nice's picturesque port at Windows Café and on two of the evenings, we dined at Discoveries Restaurant, which offered a diverse selection of dishes each day from escargot to lobster to pad thai. My dining highlight has to be Aqualina, a stunning Italian restaurant with outstanding service. The Dover sole is a must-try; it was brought to the table whole, and we watched as the waiter skilfully removed the bones and skin before serving it all with a few sumptuous sides, all ready to eat. Destination Discovery   One thing that stands out about Azamara is that their ships are smaller than many other cruise lines, which allows you to dock in hidden gems and get closer to your destination. In Nice, we were docked within walking distance from all the shops, the beach, restaurants and bars, where we stopped to experience the local cuisine and beverages while looking out at the ocean and the palm tree promenade. We also visited Corsica's beautiful port, which is so colourful and scenic, with something new to admire at every turn. It was here that we went on an excursion up to the mountains to taste some food and wine, which was excellent! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and gave us some insightful information about Corsica. There is a fascinating contrast between snow-covered mountains and sun-soaked coastline, so you can go skiing, then drive an hour and a half in the other direction and find yourself at the beach! Overall, we had the most fabulous time and wouldn't hesitate to sail with Azamara in the future. Spotlight on: Asia One of the most up-coming luxury cruise destinations, Asia is a perfect combination of cosmopolitan cityscapes, exotic ecosystems and historical highlights. Follow the cherry blossoms of Japan to the temples of Angkor in Cambodia, the vast region is a patchwork of vibrant and tropical landscapes, wonderful local life and truly unforgettable experiences. India Rich in tradition, architecture and history, India needs no introduction. It’s home to some of the most favoured cuisine in the world, varied in its cultural climate, and the perfect place to warm your soul in spirituality. As the country’s capital, Hanoi is a top choice to visit in Vietnam. It’s a city that primes the senses: the blaring horns, the delicious cuisine, the yellow-hued architecture and the delicate scents of spice markets. Meanwhile, in the mountainous north, Sa Pa offers another layer to the dynamics of Vietnam. Perched at the edge of the Hoang Lien Son range, local life dissipates into small villages and magnificent scenery. Watch as the sun sets behind the Fan Si Pan (Vietnam’s highest peak) and breathe in the Vietnamese fusion of old and new – where incense-infused temples feature alongside 21-century skyscrapers. Japan Japan offers a dazzling mix of traditional culture and sci-fi streetscapes. Designer boutiques – check! Utopian mega-malls – check! Centuries-old marketplaces on cobblestone lanes – check! It seems that there is a surprise around every corner in Japan, whether it is reminiscent of the past or hints at the future to come. The capital city, Tokyo, is one of the most populous cities in the world, with more than 13 million residents. The city also tops the list for the most Michelin stars, with over 300 handed out to restaurants across the region. Aside from local life and dining, Japan is also popular for its cherry blossom season – an annual event that is as symbolic as it is beautiful. This worldwide phenomenon offers a stunning display of pink and white that has been celebrated for centuries. Not forgetting another natural wonder, Japan’s Mount Fuji is the country’s largest mountain and an iconic landmark. Rising at 3,775m above sea level it pierces the skyline and can be seen from Tokyo or Yokohama on clear days. Malaysia Supported by the catchy tourist slogan, ‘Malaysia, Truly Asia’, this region is a melting pot of Asian cultures, with no other country hosting Asia’s three major races: Malay, Chinese and Indian. This makes it the perfect place to experience all of Asia in one go – from the dazzling lights of Kuala Lumpur to Malacca’s UNESCO World Heritage city centre. The country is multi-ethnic and multicultural, making it the perfect place to experience all of Asia in one go. More than a cruise: Cherry blossom season in Japan Japan’s cherry blossom season is a worldwide phenomenon. The stunning display of pink bursts through the cities and towns of Japan has been celebrated across the region for centuries. The season resides in Japan, where it holds a very prestigious place in the country’s culture. There are a number of cruise lines which visit this region during the cherry blossom season, just so you can experience it first-hand. Read on to find out more about what makes this experience truly unforgettable. What is cherry blossom season? Cherry blossom, also known as sakura, is a beautiful flower which blooms from several trees of the genus Prunus, in particular, the Japanese cherry. The flowers have an affinity with Japan as they bloom once per year across many of the regions in a stunning display of pinks, plums and white. The season is named hanami (flower viewing) which represents not only the cherry blossom blooming but also when locals enjoy cherry blossom viewing and are at their most relaxed. Typical hanami spots include city parks, gardens and rivers, where the trees create a beautiful display of petals. Locals also hang lanterns in the trees which lights up the trees during the evenings for a cosy, alternative perspective of cherry blossom viewing. What do they symbolise? In ancient Japan, cherry blossoms would symbolise the rice-planting season and they were used to bless the year’s harvest. The beauty of the flowers also signified the metaphor of life as the Japanese believed that sakura trees contained spirits which made offerings to them with rice wine. This then grew into the tradition of feasting during the season which eventually evolved into the celebration that we see today. When is cherry blossom season? Japanese cherry blossom season differs from region to region, but it typically starts at the end of January to early May. It only lasts one to two weeks in each region due to the delicate nature of the flowers, sometimes less if it’s raining. The season starts earlier in the south, because of the higher altitudes. Japan’s cherry blossom first begins to bloom in Okinawa in January-February, before moving to more central Japan in March-April, then ending with Hokkaido in May. Where can you see the cherry blossoms in Japan? There are endless places to see the cherry blossoms in Japan, no matter where you choose to go. With luxury cruise lines such as Regent Seven Seas, Crystal Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises venturing to a number of Japanese cruise ports, here are the best places to view the cherry blossoms on a cruise. Mount Yoshino, Osaka Mount Yoshino is situated in Yoshinoyama, in the Nara Prefecture. This has been Japan’s most famous cherry blossom viewing spot for years as it is covered in over 30,000 trees. Carpeted in pink and white blossoms, Mount Yoshino offers the perfect place for hanami. The closest cruise port to here is Osaka, which is an hour and a half’s drive from the port. Worth it for the spectacular views from the cherry-tree covered slopes! Cruise lines which sail here include Silversea, Oceania Cruises, Crystal Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises. Philosopher’s Path, Kyoto Walk along the cherry tree-lined canal and enjoy the endless canopies of blossoms above the Philosopher’s Path. The walkway is named after the philosopher, Nishida Kataro, who would meditate as he walked along this path during his daily commute to Kyoto University. The path is approximately two kilometres long, beginning in Ginkakuji and ending in Nanzenji. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes dotted along the line of the canal, perfect for a pit-stop during your relaxing walk. The Philosopher’s Path is situated inland of Kyoto, meaning that cruises to Kyoto would have to travel almost two hours to reach the path. An alternative would be to cruise to Osaka and catch the Shinkansen bullet train from here to Kyoto, taking a remarkable 15 minutes! There are four different lines you can take, depending on where you’re travelling to and from. The fastest is from Shin-Osaka Station to Kyoto Station, which is covered by the JR Pass. Cruise lines which sail to Kyoto include Regent Seven Seas, Oceania Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises. Fort Goryokaku, Hakodate This star-shaped citadel is Japan’s first Western-style fortress which was initially built during the Edo Period to defend Hakodate. After losing is military importance as the years have moved on, the fort is now a public park and home to over 1,000 cherry trees. One of the best places to take it all in is from the top of Goryokak Tower, a 107m tower which has an observation deck. Goryokaku Fort is situated close to Hakodate’s port, only a 30-minute bus ride from the dock. Cruise lines which sail here include Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Seabourn, Oceania Cruises, Crystal Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises. Shinjuku Garden, Tokyo As one of Japan’s most beautiful gardens, Shinjuku Garden is an excellent place to sit back, relax and enjoy hanami in peace and quiet. The gardens have more than 1,000 cherry trees which blossom into a magnificent display during the season. The garden features French, English and Japanese-style gardens and is perfect for watching the world goes by. Many of the trees which blossom here are of the late blossoming variety, so you can opt to visit here after peak season to avoid the busiest time. The garden is situated close to Tokyo cruise port, just a 25-minute drive from the dock. Cruises which sail here include Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Oceania Cruises, Crystal Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises. Nara Park, Osaka Another prime Osaka hanami spot is Nara Park, which offers a pleasant place to walk not only amongst 1,700 cherry trees but also over 1,000 wild sika deer. The park is a designated Place of Scenic Beauty, and the deers are classified as a national treasure. According to folklore, the deer are considered sacred and believed to be messengers from the gods. You can even purchase deer crackers in the park and feed them! As well as witnessing the stunning cherry blossoms, you can also visit the Nara National Museum and Todai-ji, where the largest wooden building in the world houses a 50 ft tall statue of Buddha. Nara Park is less than an hour’s drive from Osaka’s cruise port, so you can visit here on a sailing quite easily. Mount Fuji, Tokyo An iconic natural landscape in its own right, you can tick two natural wonders of Japan off at once by visiting Mount Fuji during cherry blossom season. Visibility of Mount Fuji is usually best in the early morning with a trip to the Fuji Five Lake region, comprising the lakes of Kawaguchiko, Saiko, Yamanakako, Shojiko and Motosuko. Lake Kawaguchiko is the easiest to reach by public transport, opting to take the train from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko. From here you can view Mount Fuji with its stunning backdrop amidst the beautiful cherry blossoms. Hirosaki Castle, Aomori View sakura at Hirosaki Castle and you can look forward to blossom tunnels, boat rides, petal-filled moats and nighttime illuminations. The castle itself is a national important cultural property, with the views of the snow-capped Mount Iwaki in the background offering a wonderful snapshot of Japanese history and nature as one. There’s even a festival in Hirosaki where you can enjoy fireworks, parades and plenty of food stalls serving Japanese delicacies such as yakisoba (fried noodles) and takoyaki (octopus fried in balls of batter). The castle is around an hour’s drive from Aomori’s cruise port, though it’s well worth it just for the experience of the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival.
