Bald Eagles

Bald eagles are among the most iconic birds of prey in the Great Lakes region, often seen soaring high above forests, rivers and open water in search of fish and small animals. Their striking white head and tail, paired with an impressive wingspan of over two metres, make them instantly recognisable. Once on the brink of extinction across much of North America, their numbers have recovered remarkably thanks to dedicated conservation efforts.

They can be spotted throughout the year, though winter is especially rewarding, as large numbers gather around stretches of open water. Watching a Bald eagle glide effortlessly overhead or perch high in a towering pine is one of the region's most memorable wildlife encounters.
