Icelandic horse

This majestic creature is not merely a resident of Iceland, but it’s a cultural icon of the country. Unlike many of the wildlife you will spot on an expedition cruise around this region, Icelandic horses are purely land-based, so you are most likely to see them from your Zodiac or even better, whilst hiking on your excursions. These animals can be spotted all over Iceland, but the best places to spot them are around Vik on open fields where they graze, as well as Snæfellsjökull National Park and around Akureyri. The summer months between June and August offer the best chances of spotting them, as well as their foals which were born in the spring.
