Black Bears

Black bears are the largest land mammals found across much of the Great Lakes, inhabiting dense forests where food and shelter are plentiful. Despite their strong build, they are surprisingly agile, climbing trees with ease and covering large distances as they forage for berries, nuts, insects and plants. They are naturally shy animals and usually avoid human activity.

The warmer months, from late spring to early autumn, offer the best chance of spotting black bears as they become more active in search of food. Early mornings and evenings are often the most rewarding times to observe these fascinating mammals in their natural surroundings.
