Manta Rays

Manta rays are some of the most graceful inhabitants of the lagoons and open water of French Polynesia. These two to seven metre marine giants glide effortlessly through water, feasting on tiny plankton that passes the strong currents. Manta Rays are observed to be completely harmless to human beings and are of a calm, inquisitive manner.

The markings on the underside of a manta ray are unique to each manta ray, like fingerprints, allowing scientists to identify them throughout their entire lifetime. They often visit cleaning stations on coral reefs where smaller fish feed on parasites on their skin. They need healthy reefs and protected waters to survive, which is why conservation is an important part of preserving these mesmerising marine encounters for the distant future.
