White-Tailed Deer

White-tailed deer are a familiar sight throughout the Great Lakes; they can be seen grazing in woodland clearings, meadows and along quiet lake shores. Elegant and alert, they are named after the bright white underside of their tail, which is raised as a warning signal when danger is nearby. They often travel in small groups, particularly outside the autumn breeding season.

They are present throughout the year, though autumn is especially rewarding for observing them, as forests transform with seasonal colour and wildlife becomes increasingly active.
